Richland Academy
Richland Academy offers the community a wide range of learning and performing programs in the arts and sciences for all ages.
The Academy has always been open to offering learning opportunities in new related areas. If you would like to obtain a catalogue listing current offerings use the web site below or call the Academy at 419/522-8224.
Tom offers the following classes and workshops at the Academy:
Improvisation
Tom offers group and private classes in jazz improvisation. This is for students of all ages and abilities. Ideally beginning students should be able to play all the major scales on their instrument. While jazz is the style used most commonly in these classes, the information can be translated into any music style including classical, country, pop, church music, etc. He is happy to meet with students to discuss these classes and help the student decide whether the classes will meet their needs.
Music Theory and Composition
Former Richland Academy students in the jazz program have done well at the collegiate level. In addition to their performance capabilities, they have done we in the areas of music theory and composition. Those students considering advanced study in music of any type are encouraged to consult with Tom regarding practical studies in these areas. This may be offered as group or individual study.
Beginning Music Students and Those Wishing to Add Keyboard Skills
Tom teaches beginning music students from age 4 to 94 using a program called "Technics Music Academy". This program can also be of benefit to music students of other instruments as well as vocalists. It is taught in the Academy’s keyboard lab. (Arrangements may also be made to teach at other sites.) Students learn basic keyboard skills. It also includes sight-reading, rhythmic skills, ear training, and even improvisation. Generally this is taught in groups but individual study is available. This can be demonstrated using the keyboard lab at the Academy or even at the meeting site of your choice. Watch for performances by the first Technics performance group "The Cultured Pearls".
